Visit of Freie Wähler Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen: Exchange on sustainable film solutions and future topics in the packaging industry

On 20 November, the Freie Wähler Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen visited our plant in Gunzenhausen. In an open and constructive discussion, we talked about sustainable packaging solutions, film innovations and the importance of functioning material cycles. Managing Director Thomas Grebner and Plant Manager Marco Stenglein presented our Verpalin concept, explained the development of highly material-efficient films and provided insights into our continuous work on innovative, resource-saving formulations.

During the plant tour, guests experienced film production up close – from granulate processing to high-quality 10-colour flexo printing. Insights into our plate-making department and a concluding get-together rounded off the visit.

The intensive exchange made one thing clear: factual dialogue, transparency and data-driven insights are essential to demonstrate the potential of modern film solutions and to dispel misconceptions.

Verpalin – sustainable film solutions by conviction

Marco Stenglein and Thomas Grebner explained our Verpalin approach:
For decades, Verpa has produced films that are as thin and material-saving as possible while maintaining high technical performance. Through targeted thickness reduction, efficient processing and the use of high-quality recyclates, we create films that combine sustainability and quality.

Our development department continuously works on combining new materials, integrating recyclates effectively and creating solutions that support customers economically while reducing raw material consumption.

Facts instead of assumptions: why plastic films are often more sustainable than expected

A key topic was the fact-based perspective on common misconceptions about plastic films. Discussions highlighted:

  • In many applications, films are ecologically and economically advantageous due to their efficiency and low weight.
  • The overall life-cycle performance matters more than the material alone and depends on functioning recycling systems.

Our position is clear: Plastic does not belong in the environment. It is a valuable resource that – especially when mono-material – can be recycled repeatedly. This is where our core strength lies: keeping materials in circulation, producing high-quality regranulates and reducing the need for virgin raw materials.

First insights into future developments: BioNatur innovation in progress

In our BioNatur line of biodegradable materials, exciting progress is also being made.
We are currently testing a new additive that – based on early results – shows promising potential for improved degradability.

As always, we do not rely solely on supplier claims; we verify every innovation in our laboratory and in practice.
Nevertheless, our focus remains: maintaining recyclable materials in the value cycle rather than promoting single-use degradation.

The tour: experiencing film production first-hand

A highlight of the evening was the tour through our plant. Guests were impressed by insights into:

  • Extrusion: formation of films in large blown-film bubbles
  • Converting: customised processing and cutting
  • Printing: high-speed 10-colour flexo printing for strong brand appearance
  • Plate-making: precision and technical expertise
  • High-bay warehouse: efficient and modern logistics processes

Visitors were enthusiastic about the technical precision, innovation and transparency throughout the production process.

Get-together: exchange, perspectives and shared understanding

The evening concluded with a relaxed get-together and further valuable discussions. Key insights were:

  • Modern film solutions contribute significantly to efficiency and sustainability when used and recycled correctly.
  • Fact-based dialogue is essential to strengthen public understanding.
  • Circular economy, innovation and partnership-oriented communication are key success factors.

Conclusion: A visit with real added value

The visit of the Freien Wähler Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen was marked by openness, curiosity and genuine dialogue.
For our team, the evening was especially meaningful thanks to the high level of interest, well-founded questions and constructive discussions. Such exchanges help overcome misconceptions and highlight the strengths of modern, sustainable film solutions.

The evening clearly showed how sustainability, efficiency and innovation work together – and how important it is to continue this dialogue.
