Joining Forces Against Food Waste
Verpa Donates 600 Food Containers to foodsharing Coburg
On Saturday, March 2, 2024, we handed over 600 food containers to the dedicated volunteers of foodsharing Coburg at our Innovation Center in Weidhausen. This donation supports the foodsharing initiative, which was launched in 2012 to rescue surplus and unsellable food from being discarded.
To illustrate the volume of surplus food produced each day, the dedicated volunteers from foodsharing Coburg brought an entire day’s worth of rescued food to our company headquarters. A large buffet displayed primarily non-refrigerated items, including surplus baked goods from local bakeries. Perishable items such as fruits and vegetables were kept refrigerated and promptly redistributed to prevent spoilage.
Currently, 37 businesses in the Coburg region—including supermarkets, kiosks, and company cafeterias—support the initiative. 275 volunteer “foodsavers” collect the food, distribute it through their networks, and deliver the rest to three regional distribution hubs. There, the rescued food is made available free of charge. In addition to combating food waste, foodsharing also plays a vital social role by supporting people in need.
The donation boxes were already put to use during the event and will continue to be used for future rescue operations. Our commitment to sustainability and environmental protection is reflected in supporting such projects, which align with our values.
André Baumann, CEO, emphasizes: “Sustainability and environmental protection are core values of our company. We are pleased that through our donation and involvement, we can contribute to reducing food waste.”
We are actively committed to a sustainable future, both through innovative measures and supportive actions in environmental and resource conservation. Our goal is to work together with partners and initiatives like foodsharing Coburg to combat food waste and promote a more conscious approach to resource management.
